A freedom number is the yearly income that would cover a life you would actually live. It is not a net-worth screenshot, and it is not a round figure you liked the look of.
Net worth is a mood. A screenshot of a brokerage app is a mood. A freedom number is a wage you would accept from a machine you own.
It is annual, because months lie. Fat months, thin months already covered that: June is a liar if you divide it by twelve. The freedom number is the yearly total that would still cover life after you have been honest about March.
The goblin lives in Thailand. The machine earns in pounds. Cost of a life here is a monthly baht budget, times twelve, divided by a rate typed in by hand. Same habit as every other assumed figure in the cave. It is not live.
Three tiers sit on the freedom page, confirmed in August, rounded because that is how the slider snaps. Base is rent, food, the boring baseline. Comfort is the same life with room to breathe. Luxury is nice, not a yacht. The goblin is not aiming at a yacht. The live sterling amounts are on that page, because typing them here is how they go stale.
Two different numbers
The goblin's own default is targets hit, not Base. That is a portfolio milestone, not a lifestyle one. It sits between Comfort and Luxury. The cave is trying to finish building two pillars, not to pick a restaurant tier and stop.
Today the pile already throws off more than Base and less than Comfort. The live run-rate is on /freedom, same as the default. That is why the ladder says the goblin is a Cave Lord (income covers real bills) and why Level 5 is still a date on a chart rather than a rung anyone is standing on.
The rate will move. A weaker pound raises every sterling tier. Thai inflation is assumed at two percent, and it only inflates the number in the real-terms readout. The headline on the freedom page is today's cost, not next decade's.
[Your number is a you-problem. Write twelve months of actual bills. Be honest about the boring ones. Convert them however your life is actually priced. I am not setting it, and the goblin's baht budgets are not a template.]
What the number is for
A fat payment is not a freedom number. Here is one of mine, so the two stay separate. Legal & General paid 15.74p per share in June 2026. I owned 126,000 shares. £19,830 landed. That is a lump. It is not a year of life. If you take a lump, divide by twelve, and file the year under "solved", you have done the June trick again.
I have already paid for loving a round number. The high-yield bag was aimed at twenty-five thousand shares so a regular quarter would look tidy against another pillar. I stopped short. The ledger kept what it bought. A freedom number picked because it looks neat in a notes app is the same personality, with more zeros. Write the bills. Then look at the chart.
The freedom number is the line the snowball is trying to cross, with dates attached. It is how you tell "a good month" from "work could go optional". Lifestyle creep is just moving the line further out and then being angry at the chart. You can set it at Base and be done earlier, or at Luxury and wait. The goblin's default is the third option: finish the plan already on the page, then argue about restaurants.
Not financial advice. Just the three lives this cave is priced against, and the fourth number it is actually walking toward, written down so a fat month cannot talk me into a fake one.
Once you have a number, the rude question is what you do with the cash when it lands. That's Reinvest or spend? The snowball, honestly.
